Condemn Telegraph columnist Liz Hunt for making fun of stuttering

I urge you to go to Miss Insensitive Liz Hunt's column at the Daily Telegraph and leave a comment condemning her latest post. She is making fun of stuttering by giving Ed Balls the name Bbbballs for revealing that he was stuttering as a kid. She might well consider the possibility that Labour politician Balls is doing his outing for political reasons, but there is no reason to make fun of stuttering in such a way. Hunt sends the message that it is OK to make fun of stuttering. If she can, why shouldn't kids and teenagers do so to their stuttering school mates? They shouldn't of course and nor should Miss Insensitive.

Just imagine anyone would write:

"Blunkett is blind in all respects to other people's concern". (a former Labour minister was blind)

"Brown has an one-eyed view on politics". (the UK prime minister is blind on one eye.)

She would never do that, but yet again it is OK  to make fun of stuttering. Shame on you! I just had a look at your picture. You seem to be getting a bit older: Not in your primes anymore, are we? Maybe we can give you a nickname like Wrinkly Liz, Has-to-hunt-now Liz, Cellulite Liz. How would that make you feel? Are you now turning into Miss Sensitive?

Damn right. I was amazed when I read it, that someone could get away with it in a major newspaper.

It's because of behaivour like this I got mocked because of my stutter at school today. Great example to be setting huh?

Liz Hunt is probably just completely clueless, and thinks that stuttering is just a bit of nervousness...

She should apologize! It is unacceptable.

I never expected this from a leading news paper in a society where stammering was exhibited by some members of the Monarchy and in an era where correct information is easily available.
Liz is product of her society and times. This is only the tip of a much bigger malady..
But she can show courage by apologising publicly and doing a write up about stammering to raise awareness..

stuttering the only disability that people still laugh at.

Email them at:

dtletters@telegraph.co.uk

and ask them why it is okay to mock people with a disability.

I left a "shame on you" comment on this article.

One of the commenters wrote "On a seperate note, almost all the press surrounding his informing us of his stutter has been negative."

I wonder why. Is anyone familiar with this story?

If anyone's curious, here are a couple of articles on Ed Balls' stuttering:

Not everybody shares my opinion, but I don't see stuttering as a disability. Nevertheless, it is very stupid of Liz Hunt to mock people who stutter. If she is lucky, she will live a long life, and chances are that she will be truly disabled by age and illness. How would an aged Liz Hunt like it if somebody mocked her inability to walk quickly, or if somebody mocked her weak heart? Liz Hunt is definitely a nasty person, and obviously very stupid and ignorant.
