Whenever stuttering drags you down..

I think it's funny you posted this guy, a very upfront christian. Who sees his life as a "ministry" after all the ranking you've done lately on religion and creationists.

It's a moving video indeed (like a lot of similar videos are).

If religion is his way to cope with his disability then so be it ... Yet I can't really agree with him using it to promote his faith and get new clients, ah, followers for Jesus*. But I guess it's unavoidable since it's having this sense of 'mission' which gives his life meaning and lets him accept his unfortunate situation ...

*I think that's a bad thing because a lot of religious people are intolerant (if they take their faith seriously) and they're also promoting an unscientific way of thinking and superstition.

This is inspiring and great, but I can't help but say that stuttering is qualitatively different from most other disabilities because people do not understand why we stutter and we can speak fluently some times and stutter intensely at other times, so people are confused by our stutter and think it is ONLY behavioral and we gain hope and have it killed regularly.

That said, I do not mean to sound too negative or anything. This guy is making the best of an unfortunate situation in a way that I wish I had the strength to do.

@Sean:

My ranking was on irrational and science-ignoring religious beliefs.

I didn't even notice that he did ministry. I focused on his general attitude. And after all, he is not saying anything that contradicts science.

I just think he comes a across as a good example on getting on with life and not ask "why me". Accept and do the best.

If he did, I would highlight it!

Thx. Another thing to make us feel more guilty about our stutter. Life is all about expression. Severe stuttering is pure hell-not being able to be or act like your true self. I would tried this guy in a heartbeat. He's happy and I'm not.

This man is really a brave. However, severe stuttering is more pathetic than being physically handicap but general people does not realize this.

I agree that stuttering is perceived in a totally different way.

In the case of physically handicapped people (amputated, blind, etc and to a certain degree deaf and mute) people tend to say: "Aw, look at the poor people!"

In the case of stutter they tend to say: "Hey, look at those dumb freaks! They must really be stupid since they can't even speak normally!"

That said I prefer to stutter (especially since I can control it to a certain degree) to having his handicap ...

I totally admire his will and state of mind though. But I'm sure he has his bad days too.

Unbelievable video! Thanks a lot Tom. To cut a long story short, most of my life I struggled with stuttering, and the biggest dream was to get rid of it once and for all. To be honest, I had no idea what it feels like...to talk without stuttering? Check out this video:

What do you think of the researchers? Will you be there finally!

And did Shenker accept your debate? Why didn't she? How about Mark Onslow?

I would like to nominate Edward Thompson for a crackpot award! Ok, maybe he is not a true crackpot. How about a new award for charlatans? Scumbag award?

I have seen Nick's very moving video before. Always good to remind us that someone always has something more challenging to deal with than us.

To see Nick's video, and then see this Edward Thompson's scam full of promises to cure stuttering . . I so hate to see vulnerable people who stutter fall prey to this stuff.

I don't think one should compare one disability with another, and make conclusion if it's easier or harder to be a stutterer or physically disabled... It's just comparing apples and oranges, 2 different worlds...
